Unlike many people, being diagnosed with breast cancer didn’t force Renae to reevaluate her priorities. As a devoted mother, she already knew her family was the most important thing in her life. In fact, she credits the support of her family with being critical to maintaining a positive attitude during her fight.
Renae’s close bonds with her son and daughter also left her even more determined to beat the disease for their sake. So at Carle Cancer Center, Renae chose to participate in a clinical trial for a number of reasons. Not only did it give her the opportunity to participate in the latest research, it also gave her the chance to be part of something that could impact future generations – including her children.
After finishing treatment under the guidance and care of Patricia Johnson, MD, PhD and Ron Sapiente, MD, Renae joined a support group, where she found a sort of extended family. Renae believes being in a support group is an integral part of a successful journey with cancer, one that has led to life changing conversations and the opportunity to help others in a unique way.
In the more than five years since her victory over breast cancer, Renae has watched her children graduate and her family grow. Whether with family or friends, Renae has always felt the relationships you develop are more valuable than any material possession. For her, the opportunity to watch her new grandson grow is the most precious gift of all.
